What if I don't want to get divorced?

Few things in life are as stressful as a divorce. This is especially true for marriages that have lasted decades. If one spouse doesn't want to get divorced, what happens then?

In Michigan, there is a waiting period before a divorce is finalized. The waiting period for couples without children is 60 days; for couples with children, the waiting period is six months. In addition, only one person has to want a divorce for it to occur because Michigan is a no fault state.

If you don't want a divorce, you may want to speak with an attorney about how to best handle the situation. You can draw out the divorce process by litigating many divorce issues, but really all that will do is cost you a lot of time and money. It may be in your best interest to seek counseling to help you deal with the end of your marriage.

If you do not want to get a divorce, you may end up not paying much attention to what is going on with your divorce case. You should pay attention so that you can fight for assets that you deserve. Your financial future is important. If children are involved, making sure that custody or parenting time is fair and equitable is also a primary concern.

At the Schwartz Law Firm, we are ready to help you move forward with the divorce, but we also want to make sure you end up with what is rightfully yours. To learn more about divorce, child custody, parenting plans and other divorce issues, visit our webpages devoted to such topics.
